Hansa Institute Presents  the Background Research for the Workplace Justice Campaign

Dr. Yoon Lee (President of Hansa) presented the findings from Hansa’s Survey of Korean American Workers and Korean American Small Business Employers in the Cook and Lake Counties. The twin survey project was launched in September 2007 in order to support the Workplace Justice Campaignof the Korean American Culture and Resource Center (KRCC) NFP. Based on the findings, KRCC is positioned to launch educational activities for the new immigrant workers and employers about the laws related to employment.

Obesity and Chronic Conditions of Asian Americans, by  Dr. Minwoog Sohn (Northwestern University, Research Professor; Veteran’s Hospital)

Dr. Sohn presents his findings from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Systems (BRFSS) data 2005, compiled by the Center of Disease Control (CDC). Dr. Sohn found that Asian Americans’ obesity rate is lower than whites, but the chances of major serious illness (diabetics, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart failure, cardio-vascular illness, stroke, asthma, and arthritis) are significantly higher among over-weighted Asians than their white counterparts.

Korean American Adolescents’ Depressive Symptoms and Deviant Behaviors: Individual and Contextual Factors by  Dr. Irene J. K. Park (University of Notre Dame, Dept. of Psychology)

Dr. Park presents her findings about the predictability of depressive symptoms and deviant behaviors of Korean American adolescents in the Chicago area. With multi-level regression analysis of her data collected from 97 KA adolescent, she examines the effects of cultural factors, family factors, and modes of anger management on predicting depressive symptoms and deviant behaviors...

Social Influences on Willingness to See a Professional Counselor among Asian American Students by Paul Yungbin Kim Univ. of (Notre Dame, Doctoral Student in Counseling Psychology)

Mr. Kim presents his M.S. thesis based on his survey of 110 undergraduate Asian American students. His study confirms the previous findings that there is a link between Asian cultural values and willingness to see a counselor. The findings highlight the importance of social influences on help-seeking attitudes among Asian American students when the need arises.

These research reports will be presented in English and all interested parties are invited. There will be a buffet breakfast starting at 8:30 A.M. Attendance and breakfast are free of charge. Presentations start at 9:00 A.M.

Factors of Breast Cancer Screening Among Korean Immigrants in the U.S. by Dr. Eunice Lee (UIC, Dept. of Nursing).

Prof. Lee presents her findings from a survey of 189 Korean women in Cook County, conducted in 2003-2004. Prof. Lee found that Korean women than women of other races are less likely to take three types of diagnostic tools to prevent breast cancer. She argues that her findings are compatible with results in the studies of Korean women in other states, and explains the factors behind the Korean women’s lesser reliance on these generally practiced methods of cancer prevention.      

Attaining American Dream and Costs We Paid. by Dr. Yoon M. Lee (President, Hansa Institute).

Dr. Lee, using the U.S. Census 2005 American Community Survey data, has found that over 200,000 Koreans moved in 2004 in the states. Dr. Lee presents the statistical evidence that Illinois Koreans, compared to non-Koreans, are working longer hours to own more costly housings in the suburbs and bearing heavier financial burdens.
